Conecuh Pitcher Plant. Conecuh National Forest, located along the southern border of the state in Escambia and Covington counties, is home to a stunning variety of carnivorous plants. Pictured here is the white-topped pitcher plant (Sarracenia leucophylla). The richness of the Sierran flora mirrors that of the state as a whole--of the nearly 6, species of vascular plants known to occur in California, over 20% of them can be found within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. As part of the festivities surrounding the th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the th anniversary of his book On the origin of species by means of natural selection, the Journal of Experimental Botany commissioned a series of review articles on topics about which Darwin wrote.
